Summary

Margaret Simon， almost twelve， likes long hair， tuna fish， the smell of rain， and things that are pink。 She’s just moved from New York City to Farbook， New Jersey， and is anxious to fit in with her new friends—Nancy， Gretchen， and Janie。 When they form a secret club to talk about private subjects like boys， bras， and getting their first periods， Margaret is happy to belong。

Despite the title， I truly didn’t think it would have so much to do with religion。Whenever it focused on parts about girlhood， I really liked it。 I also liked how it showed that girls always want to get things associated with womanhood （periods， bras， chest development， etc） but how actually having it is not all fun。I didn’t appreciate how her parents just seem incompetent and the grandparent stuff was annoying after a while。 I also did NOT appreciate the creepy teacher。It was fine。

The last time I read this book was when I was probably also 12。 Back then I read it countless times， I loved it so much。 Reading it now， as an adult， parent and teacher， it still gives me the same happy feeling I got then。 Despite it being written and set in the late 60s/early 70s， the themes are still relevant: puberty， friendships， family drama， and trying to find your place in the world。 I highly recommend。 Glad I got to re-read the book before the movie comes out！

This book is very relatable for young girls。 They don’t really know who they are yet and what they want to be。 Their bodies are changing and they don’t know how to handle it。 Margaret doesn’t practice any religion and throughout the book she goes to different churches to figure out which one bests suits her。 By the end of the book she still hasn’t decided and she seems ok with that。 She said it just take time。

Who gets girlhood better than Judy Blume？！Margaret， though only in the sixth grade， is an infinitely relatable character， and rereading this book feels like looking back on my own childhood memories。 In one of my favorite moments， two of Margaret’s friends get their periods and she declares to God that “life is getting worse every day” because she feels like she’s falling behind。 She just wants to be normal， and isn’t that something all adolescents can relate to？
